The Boxer's background is tied to both the Bulldog and Mastiff type dogs. He descends from the Bullenbeisser, a commonly used hunting dog in Germany during the middle ages. Later, when the baiting of dangerous beasts became sport, a smaller Bullenbeisser became popular. This was a medium-sized dog, the bull-baiting dog supreme. The English Bulldog, in an earlier stage of its development, was very similar to the Boxer.
Up until 1830 the breed displayed only brindle and fawn colors with some limited white. But at that date the English Bulldog was brought to Germany and crossed to dogs of Boxer breeding. It is the Bulldog white, a recessive that runs in certain Boxer strains, that still produces whites (Checks).
The first Boxer was registered in 1904, and the first Boxer champion finished in 1915. Fine companions and pets, sturdy and easy to keep clean, the Boxer is a good and dependable family and watch dog.
Boxer ears are generally cropped in this country, but more and more pet owners are choosing the uncropped, more natural look. The black mask is absolutely required. The tail should always be docked, as this is a definitive part of the Boxer's clean-cut appearance.
The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance. He should be alert and fearless; willing to make friends, but not necessarily effusive. He is good-natured, suffering the pokes and prods of children with stoicism, accepting friendly strangers, and always ready for a game.
